While they are cogni tively based theories, the cognitions studied include beliefs about author ity and autonomy, competence, expectancies, reward systems, and per- ceptions of the interpersonal environment of the classroom. In Part V. the discussants comment on different aspects of the chapters, one focus- ing on student factors and the other focusing on teacher and classroom factors. These discussant chapters are intended, on the one hand, so provide some integration across the different theoretical perspectives presented in this book and, other, to point out problems and issues of concern as well as to promising areas of further inquiry in each paradigm.
