Among the common streotypes of Islam prevalent in North America and Europe are, it is religion of Arabs per se; it is primitive, uncivilised, fanatic, polygamous and anti-women; it is militant, anti-Western and promotes terrorism; it has little or no regard for human rights, tolerance and pluralism; and, that the Islamic world will remain backward unless it conforms to Western values, where modernity in the "Western" context is seen as the only form of civilisation.
