The loss of his companionship is felt once more with especial keenness when writing these lines, coupled with thankfulness for the continuing interest in his life's work. Even after completing his Bismarck biography, my father continued to follow new publications on the period with intens curiosity. What fascinated him above all was the opening of the archives on the Hohenzollern candidature for the Spanish throne and the origins of the war of 1870. 1957 saw the publication of hitherto secret documents from the German Diplomatic Archives in Bismarck and the Hohenqollern Candidature for the Spanish Throne, edited with an introduction by Georges Bonnin and translated by Isabella M. Massey, with a foreword by G. P. Gooch (London: Chatto & Windus). While the official German version of Bismarck's passive role in this affair had been steadily undermined over the years.."
