Description
Summary:In view of the vital role which scientific and technical information has come to play in the development of nations, the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) was authorized1 to undertake and to complete jointly with the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU) a feasibility study on the establishment of a world science information system (UN I S I S T).a A Unesco/ICSU Central Committee was created in January 1967 to carry out the feasibility study. The conclusions of this study and a description of the proposed World Science Information System are contained in the Study Report, of which this is a synopsis. The conduct of science requires countries to commit both intellectual and material resources. As governments have reviewed their national science policies, questions associated with the allocation of funds and equipment and with the development of scientific manpower have become familiar, if not resolved. The organization of the informational resources of science has been given less attention. The Unesco/ICSU joint project has as its central theme the international deployment of the informational resources of science.
