502 # # |a Corn cultivation in Malaysia primarily occurs in smallholder enterprises located in the river valleys of Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, and Perak. Until 1986, the total corn cultivation area was 4591 hectares, with 2.4% dedicated to grain corn and 97.6% to sweet corn. The demand for grain corn in Malaysia increased alongside the growth of the non-ruminant livestock sector, particularly chickens and pigs, which heavily rely on grain corn in their diet. Corn is irreplaceable due to the inadequacy and high cost of alternatives like low-quality tapioca and millet in the local market. Trials replacing corn with oil palm kernel cake (CPK) and soybeans for non-ruminant livestock were found to be economically unviable.
