While rice remains the staple food, efforts are made to increase productivity through irrigation expansion for double cropping. The Fifth Malaysia Plan focuses on concentrating rice production in eight major granary areas, totaling around 200,000 hectares of irrigated land. Outside these areas, rice cultivation will gradually be replaced by more profitable crops. The National Agricultural Policy aims to maximize farm income by expanding farm size, mechanization, and cultivating cash crops. Strategies include land consolidation, rehabilitation of idle padi lands into group farms, and centralized management. Production targets aim to meet 55-66% of domestic rice requirements. Infrastructure improvements in granary areas are planned to enhance machinery use, but drainage facilities focus on surface water only, limiting mechanization in low-lying areas during the rainy season.
