Description
Summary:Mechanization is required for harvesting of crop in Malaysia because of shortage of labour. However, the use of imported combine harvesters is difficult during the off-season crop harvest. The difficulties arise from the existence of 'soft' soil and the wet crop conditions. The extent of 'soft' soil that could not support heavy machinery in the padi areas is substantial. In some of these areas, the conventional big combine could be used even thoughit may damage the soil by forming very deep ruts. However, there are large padi areas with inadequate drainage facilities that cannot be harvested using the big machine. The use of big combine harvesters is not economical in small padi areas because of low annual usage. In such padi areas, a different type of mechanized harvesting system is required.
