Summary: | The rambutan (Nephelium lappaceeum L.) is a member of the family Sapindaceace. It is a very common and widely cultivated fruit-tree in Malaysia. In Peninsular Malaysia there are 12 other species in the genus (RIDLEY, 1932) of which only two are well-know and cultivated. These are the pulasan (Nephelium mutabile BI.) and mata kucing (Nephelium malaiense Griff.). Formerly the litchi, longan and mata kucing, which resemble the rambutan, were referred to the same genus, i.e. Nephelium, but they are now classified as Litchi chinesis Sonn. (POPENOE, 1934), Dimocarpus longan sub. sp. longan and sup. sp. malesianus Leench. respectively (LEENHOUTS, 1971). |
