Description
Summary:The inaugural Asean People's Awards committee did an excellent job of posthumously awarding our diplomat extraordinaire, the late Tun Muhammad Ghazali Shafie, for his contributions towards the founding of Asean.Ghazali was an expert in international affairs, known for his flamboyance and dashing style."Ghazali had style, verve, intellect and confidence verging on arrogance," wrote one observer way back when Ghazali was at the peak of his life. The Pahang-born leader, a former home minister and foreign minister, helped our first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj shape the formation of Asean and the Organisation of Islamic Conference. He rose to the pinnacle of the ministry after having served as permanent secretary of the foreign ministry, leading in the efforts to keep Malaysia's foreign policy on a neutral course of non-alignment. Ghazali retired from government service as a government officer in 1970, when he was appointed as a senator and was given a position in the cabinet as a minister with special duties. In 1972, he contested in the parliamentary election for Lipis and won. He then continued to serve as minister with special duties and information minister.
