The photographs and illustrations that have been selected will inspire the reader to understand the value and beauty of the traditional wood carvings. The book also explains the origins of the history of the carved motifs, and the philosophy of life, grace and politeness of the Malays imbued within the leitmotifs. In Peninsular Malaysia, art carving is inseparable from fine art as they belong within the same field. Throughout the ages, art carving has also been inseparable from Malay culture. If one highlights the distant past by taking as the starting point the transition from prehistory to modern history, we find a period of great challenge for the Malay race, one which is dubbed the Living Stone Age or Megalithic Culture. During that time, the Malays began to erect monuments of stone imbued with spiritual values in the form of ancestor worship and animism.Artefacts from thousands of years past still show traces of the appreciation for carvings and art, even though they may not necessarily have been the products of serene and aesthetical inspiration, whether through social philosophy or from socio-cultural perspectives.
