They opposed it because they prevented the British from doing away with the Institution of the Malay King and opening up citizenship to all British people in the world. Malayan opposition to the Malayan Union was not liked by the Communist Party of Malaya. This party then cooperated with radical Malays, who initially favoured UMNO. However, because they failed to get the leadership of the Malays, they rejected UMNO and cooperated with the Malayan Communist Party. The Communist Rebellion of 1948 was declared. With this, all leftist and radical parties were banned. Accordingly, the British collaborated with UMNO to bring Malaya towards its own government and independence on August 31, 1957
