The pattern of household debt that increases every year makes our country a champion in debt. This is evident when the household debt ratio in this country reaches 140 percent. The rate far exceeds neighboring countries Singapore (105 percent), Thailand (53 percent) and Indonesia (38 percent). Most of them are identified as being in debt when they first enter the job market in their mid-20s. Then, they are plagued with debt when they reach the age of 30. This situation is very worrying when those who are in their youth and productive age should contribute to the development and progress of the country's economy, but instead have to deal with the issue of debt. In an effort to deal with this development, the Center for Economic & Social Studies (EMAS), Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM), has organized a Seminar on Household Debt Burden: Causes and Solutions in the third quarter of 2014. In this Seminar, there are several papers that have been presented the results of a study by economic and financial experts in this country. IKIM is of the opinion that this study should not only be used by the participants of this Seminar, it should even be used by the entire community in this country. Based on this awareness, IKIM has taken the initiative to publish this book.
