His real name is Muhammad bin Idris bin Abbas bin UIthman bin Shafie bin Saib bin Abdu Yazid bin Hashim bin Abdul Mutalib bin Abdul Manaf. His father was a descendant of Quraish from the Banu Mutalib. His father had died when Imam Shafie was still a child. He was born in the Palestinian city of Gaza in the month of Rajab in the year 150 AH. Some say that on the night he was born Imam Abu Hanifah (Imam Hanafi) died. The Islamic caliph at that time was the caliph Abu Jaafar Al Mansur of the Abbasids. Imam Syafie was brought up in poverty. Since he was a child, he had studied the Quran.
