Some gave a positive response to the idea, while others saw it negatively. Conceptually, some analyse the 'Malaysian nation' in a legalistic way by linking it to the concept of 'citizenship', while others see it as 'race'. By defining the nation as a political community formed in history linked through the sharing of territory, culture, and language, as well as a sense of nationhood and shared destiny, this book asserts that we need to distinguish between nation and race, as well as between citizens. While showing the difference in the experience of nation-state differences between Europe and Malaysia, this book looks at the construction of the nation in terms of history as well as the present, taking into account the continuity and changes that occur. Based on the history of the Malay World and the development of the Malay nation, the gap between the 'ideal nation' and the nation born in real politics is highlighted. Also discussed are the nation-state building process and the Malaysian nation in the era of globalisation
