 Similar to the nature of most traditional Malay theatres, Mek Mulung is loaded with various elements of symbolism as well as dramatic actions rich in aesthetics. It fundamentally serves for the purpose of medication and respect for ancestors or ancestral spirits of several previous generations, in the belief that the practice is capable of protecting the heir from the distortion of nature and supernatural powers. However, the mystical scenario is no longer relevant, thus risking killing the survival of the performing arts of the Old Kedah heritage. The question is, should the art of the old treasures documenting part of the life of the Malay empire of the past be abandoned and gradually extinct? This book tries to bring justice to Mek Mulung.
