The knowledge of Islamic legal maxims is very important, and is complementary to the knowledge on the principles of Islamic jurisprudence (upul al-figh) and objectives of the Shari'ah (maqasid al-shari'ah). Although it is not considered a primary source, it is nevertheless very important. This is so since the extraction of rules requires the right methodology and principles given that the divine texts (nass) provide general guidelines whereas rulings are getting more numerous and more complex each day such that it necessitates a method of mining these rules.
