Summary: | Kelantan Islamic Religious Council and Malay Ceremonies (MAIK) is the first religious institution ever established in the Malay states in the Malaysian Peninsula. Shortly after the enforcement of the Bangkok Agreement of 1909 which saw British intervention in the administration of the state of Kelantan, some Malay intellectuals of Kelantan at that time felt the need for a special institution to be established to regulate Malay religious and ceremonial administration that was 'outside the jurisdiction' of British advisers , as a balance or buffer for the loss of state administrative power that previously rested in the hands of the sultan and traditional dignitaries. In its history, this institution played a very important role in the education of the Malays in particular and the social and political awareness of the Kelantan community in general through the activities it has initiated since its establishment until now. This book outlines the three main aspects of MAIK's role, namely in the fields of religion, schooling, and publishing during its 75 years of operation - from MAIK's opening in 1915 until 1990. With the background of the author's experience and familiarity with MAIK, this book is expected to be a study an authoritative scholar in the field of writing the history of religious ceremonies in the Malay states pioneered by this book. |
