 Living fossils' are closely related to sharks. These animals have lived for the past 395 million years and still retain many of the characteristics possessed by extinct species. At a time when other life such as dinosaurs have become extinct for a variety of reasons, sharks are still alive and we can still see more than 450 species exist to this day. When a person first goes down to sea, the life he fears most is sharks. This has been told for generations and is believed to this day, that sharks are ferocious creatures. Many people think that when a person falls into the sea, it is very likely that the victim will be the victim of a shark, as the Malay proverb says "Jong pecah yu kenyang". Small children playing in the sand by the beach were also teased by parents not to stretch their legs into the water, afraid of being bitten by sharks. This teasing was successful, and many parents did. I also do the same if I see my toddler too daring to play in the sea water during a family picnic. The poor perception of people around the world towards sharks began after the success of Jaws' film which premiered in the late 70s. The film has managed to influence a large part of the minds of the world's population to turn all species of sharks into vicious creatures. In the actual context, ferocious sharks are just a few species and cases of shark attacks are extremely rare, but when they occur the story is often exaggerated. The death of a 'crocodile hunter' due to a stingray also shocked the world community. If Mr. Steve Irwin is destined to die from a shark attack, surely society's bad perception of sharks will be even worse.
