Essentials of Physiology is directed to students in tertiary education in their first year studying within medicine, dentistry or science, or entering one of the allied health professions. The content of the text has been guided by an internationally agreed set of objectives and it is divided into four major sections. The first section on basic properties covers cells and cellular events, and functional principles of nerve, muscle and synapse. The subsequent 'dynamic' sections cover maintenance, communication, reproduction and integration, both internally and in response to the external environment.
