Description
Summary:During his leadership for more than 20 years, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad created various ideas in his administration that greatly influenced Malaysian policies covering political, economic, and social aspects. One of the interesting policies that have been introduced by Dr. Mahathir's Look East Policy was launched in 1982 with the aim of imitating the culture and work ethic of the Japanese and Korean communities to drive Malaysia's economic progress. Dr. Mahathir was very impressed with the success of Japan and Korea in developing their economies and wanted to make those countries a model for Malaysia, which has been heavily dependent on the West. Dr. Mahathir attributed Japan's economic success to the positive attitudes of its people, such as being hardworking, dedicated, innovative, appreciating time, and valuing high quality in all aspects of life. In order to make this policy a success, the government has launched a programme to send Malaysian students and workers there in order to learn technology and emulate their work culture. Since it was started in the early 1980s until the beginning of 2000, several thousand Malaysian students and workers had the opportunity to follow the training scheme provided. Now that this programme has been running for more than two decades, an evaluation needs to be made to determine how successful it is for Malaysia
