Japanese dishes differ slightly from the various courses traditionally found in Western and European cuisines. For example, a Western -style multi -course meal might include a first course of a light appetizer, soup or salad. The second course may include protein or a combination of meat, vegetables, and carbohydrates (rice, potatoes or other starches). The third course may include a light salad course, followed by a fourth dessert course.
