Description
Summary:Academic and Professional Writing for Teachers is written by a teacher who now works in teacher education. It was written specifically for student teachers but practising teachers, other students, and anyone else who wishes to improve their writing may also find it useful. The book focuses on developing a reader-focused and socially-aware approach to academic and professional writing. The purpose of this book is twofold. First, it aims to help readers develop their academic writing, and second, it aims to help readers develop the language and communicative competence to write effectively in professional contexts. To fulfil its purpose, this book presents useful lessons and concepts based on theory and experience. Each chapter includes a set of achievable learning objectives, practice activities and discussion questions. Activities are situated in realistic academic and professional writing settings to illustrate how concepts can be applied in different contexts, from preparing academic assignments and scholarly articles to communicating with students, colleagues, parents, government officials and others in the community whom teachers might interact with in the course of their work. Authentic writing samples (reproduced with permission from student teachers) and samples of model academic and professional writing are also included throughout the book. The first part of the book (Chapters 1 7) focuses on academic writing. Chapter 8 is devoted to the grammar of formal writing and how grammar can affect meaning in academic and professional writing contexts. Many concepts from the first part of the book are reinforced in the second part (Chapters 9 13), which focuses on professional writing for teachers. The final chapter emphasises the importance of proofreading all writing
