Summary: | The Consumer Legal Struggle reflects the efforts made by consumer associations, especially the Federation of Malaysian Consumer Associations (FOMCA) in producing a comprehensive act to protect the rights and interests of consumers in the country. The enactment of the Consumer Protection Act 1999 after being championed by consumer associations since 1978 has opened a new dimension in ensuring the rights and interests of consumers in Malaysia are not neglected. Effective consumer protection needs to be based on the law in addition to elements of consumer education. The law must be fair to all parties and enforced efficiently and effectively. This is important to ensure that every consumer legislation is able to realize the concepts of 'value for money', 'value for human beings' and 'value for the environment further proving the truth of the' consumer is king 'philosophy. |
