 Malaysia gained independence in 1957 during a state of Emergency, which had been declared some nine years earlier. In 1969, the country was rocked by racial riots, the worst it has ever seen. Despite such internally driven threats, the country has remained relatively stable. Today, Malaysia relies on a variety of instruments in order to enhance its security, from regional arrangements, such as ASEAN and FPDA, to self reliance through modernizing its armed forces.
