Summary: | A surgeon needs to possess good operative skills and towards this goal he needs to have a sound knowledge of the instruments he uses. The instrument section describes Metal, Plastic and Rubber instruments. For example how many students are aware that alloys of iron are steel, manganese steel, stainless steel and titanium steel, that steel is a mixture of iron and carbon and that stainless steel is an alloy of iron (80%), chromium (15%), nickel (4%) and carbon (0.5 to 1 %). It is the addition of a minimum of12 % chromium to the steel that makes it resist rust, or become stainless. The exact mechanism of how chromium makes the steel stain 'less' is described in the relevant chapter. |
