Description
Summary:For first courses on COBOL programming, a new introductory text that covers fundamental principles of COBOL as a business problem-solving programming language - with a wealth of business-oriented exercises and programming examples. Students are exposed to structured programming methodology right from the start, including program design, coding and documentation. Rather than limit coverage to one style of programming design tool, each sample program in the text includes four design methods - flow-chart, pseudo-code, hierarchy charts, and Nassi-Schneiderman charts. In addition, discussion of COBOL.85 features in appropriate chapters makes differences between COBOL.74 and COBOL.85 readily apparent. The extensive pedagogical structure is clearly focused on student needs. Exercises are provided after each major chapter. An end-of-chapter checklist, with section and page references, serves as a self-test, and eye-catching boxes highlight COBOL rules and problematic programming points. Unique "debugging clinics" in chapters 3 through 14 help students learn to identify and correct common programming errors. Two full chapters are devoted to tables, one to single-level and one to multi-level tables; and programming examples include written explanation of all major elements, along with sample input and output
