Summary: | Mycology: Laboratory Manual is designed for laboratory work in mid-level biology courses. Eight experiments are included in this manual which tries to provide students with a basic concept to the study of mycology. The three earlier experiments deal with the microscopic examination of moulds and yeasts and the next two experiments explore the different reproductive features of moulds and yeasts. The applications of techniques in the study of fungi are dealt with in experiments six and seven. The last experiment exposes students to the basic identification characteristics of our local mushrooms. In addition to the eight experiments, there is a guide to writing the lab report which acquaints the students to the format, content and writing style of a good laboratory report. Although the students taking this couse are already familiar with the microbiology laboratory techniques but there is a page in this manual that is dedicated to General Lab Practice (GLP) in a microbiology laboratory. A page on some routes of infection and a page on risks of hazardous microorganisms are also included in this manual. The authors hope that the students who use this manual will benefit by conducting the experiments and using the information given in the manual wisely. The authors are indebted to many other people who contributed directly or indirectly towards the writing-up of this manual. They include all lecturers and laboratory staff of the Microbiology Programme of the Faculty of Applied Science, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Shah Alam, Selangor. Some are still working with the university but there are some who have retired and left the university. We thanked you for your support, assistance and advice. |
