It metabolizes several compounds, filters toxic substances from the blood circulation and acts as a booster for the blood. But its most important function is for gas exchange; therefore we start with the part of the blood-gas interface, where gas exchange takes place. Oxygen and carbon dioxide move between air and blood by simple diffusion, that is, from areas of low partial pressure, like water running down a hill.
