Description
Summary:In 1995 experts convened in Bethesda, Maryland under the sponsorship of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to review the evidence of the influence of physical activity on cardiovascular health. This publication presents the Consensus Statement for the Conference on Physical Activity and Cardiovascular Health and the supporting papers presented by leading researchers in the field. The 28 papers document: public health problems of sedentary lifestyles; current data and opinion on the contributions of the different types and amounts of physical activity for reducing cardiovascular disease; and the role of exercise in the rehabilitation of people with cardiovascular disease. The report complements and augments the Surgeon General's Report on Physical Activity. Readers should also find successful approaches for implementing and maintaining physical activity programmes for various populations, including older and disabled adults
