Summary:MALAY Essay Assessment The emergence of the communicative trend in language education in the 1970s and its development up to now not only influenced teachers of English as a second language, but also influenced the teaching of Malay as a first language. With a focus on the teaching of the language system and its use so that students can construct and use appropriate language structures according to the social context they face, the goal of the secondary school Malay language education program is actually the communicative competence emphasized by this trend. Accordingly, this book presents an alternative method in assessing existing writing skills, namely by assessing writing skills as communication skills. Through the research conducted, the types in high school that are oriented to information, audience, and writers have communicative ideas in them. This communicative idea is used as a focus in the construction of an assessment instrument based on a holistic approach to grade essays according to achievement categories. Secondary level Malay language teachers should take advantage of these instruments in teaching writing skills as well as evaluating the progress of school operations.
