Description
Summary:Biotechnology and biochemistry has involved with many parts of the chemical industry, agriculture, and medicine. These two subjects have demarcation between basic and applied research, and new discoveries and innovations, in most cases, can find direct application. Innovations, techniques, and tools that have emerged and revolutionized modern biotechnology include genetic engineering, cell fusion technology, bioprocess technologies, and structure-based molecular designs including drug development, drug targeting, and drug delivery systems. After 20 years of growing pains, the biotechnology sector is coming into its own as a mature industry, as highlighted in the article on Nature Reviews Drug Discovery (1). This is reflected in the number of companies that have made lucrative licensing deals with toptier pharmaceutical companies, as well as in the growing number of biotech companies that are on their way to becoming fully integrated drug development enterprises. With several leading biotech companies posting billion dollar earnings in 2001, there is little doubt that the major players in this industry have discovered a formula for success.
