Description
Summary:The topic of Islamization of knowledge and education in Islam has been debated since the First World Conference on Islamic Education in Makkah in 1977. But unfortunately there has been no serious effort to trace the history of ideas and study or evaluate a number of key issues related to this topic at a practical level. The idea of Islamization actually starts from the assumption that science is not value-free or neutral. No matter how important it is to transfer Western knowledge to the Islamic world, that knowledge inevitably contains values and reflects the worldview of the society that produced it, in this case the Western society. Before being taught through education, the knowledge must be filtered first so that values that are diametrically opposed to the Islamic worldview can be eliminated. The idea of Islamization, thus, is an effort to deconstruct Western knowledge to later be reconstructed into the Islamic knowledge system. This book examines in detail the issue of Islamization of knowledge and education in the Islamic World as conceived and practiced by Syed Muhammad Naquib Al-Attas, one of the most prominent contemporary Muslim thinkers. The author of this book places Al-Attas as an early conceptor of the idea of Islamization of science and education.
