Description
Summary:This book is aimed at the students, educators and practitioners of clinical medicine and allied sciences, viz, dental nursingh and paramedical disciplines. The book has three parts. The first part deals with the core skills of effective communication, the second with clinical applications and third goes beyond communication
The first edition of this manual was published in 2000, when the importance of communication skills in clinical practice was not realized by educators and not formally taught in medical, dental colleges in India. Perhaps it was the first practical manual (in English) on this subject released in Asia by Jaypee Bros, the major publisher. The second edition has included recent references. The first section covers the core skills of effective communication and is followed by the section illustrating how these core principles are applied in real life practice. There are a lot of relevant examples, anecdotes and personal narratives that make it easy to follow even some of the complex concepts such as advanced questioning skills, patient centered care, etc. With India adopting competency based medical education in 2018, the need for a formal text on communication skills in clinical practice is fulfilled y this book. Every chapter ends with suggestion to the educators on how these principles can be effectively taught through simulation roleplays. All in all, a timely release by Jaypee Bros in 2017 to help medical colleges launch AETCOM module effectively. (Review by Dr Poligar Shankar, DNB)
