Description
Summary:A complete introduction to teaching English at secondary school level and above. Success in English Teaching contains ideas and teaching techniques and suggestions that are of interest to all teachers of English as a foreign language throughout the world. It is especially suitable for teachers who haven't yet had any formal training, or who did their training some time ago. If you don't yet have much - or any - experience as a teacher, the book encourages you to draw on your personal experience as a language learner to help you to decide what techniques and approaches will and won't work in different situations. The book is organized into twelve chapters. Chapters 1 to 7 focus on actual classroom teaching. They set out theoretical principles and tie them in with practical teaching ideas. The specific topics covered in these chapters are: - Presenting new language items - including through writing; - Organizing language practice - including discussion of accuracy, fluency, and feedback and correction; - Handling vocabulary - including related work on grammar, punctuation, and spelling; - Developing spoken communications skills, both inside and outside the classroom; - Developing written communication skills; - Review and remedial work - including descriptions of the language learning process. Chapters 8 to 12 consider other aspects of teaching English. Topics covered are: - Planning and managing classes - including syllabus design and classroom management (getting attention and participation, and discipline issues) - Working with a coursebook - what they can offer, how to use them, and when and why to supplement them; - Teaching aids and materials - including boardwork, use of real and imaginary objects, recorded material and video clips; - Testing and evaluation - including using different kinds of test and writing your own - Development in teaching English - different methods of and approaches to teaching; how to develop as a teacher. There are tasks and discussion questions throughout the book and each chapters ends with a summary and project work. The book also contains a glossary, a list of sources and suggestions for further reading, and an index.
