Summary: | The critical importance of environmental science and environmental studies cannot be disputed as we enter the twenty-first century. Virtually every one is aware of environmental issues-be they global warming, the depletion of the ozone layer, the controversy over nuclear power, or the con tinuing problems of water pollution and solid waste disposal. Politicians who once focused pri- marily on such issues as economic productivity and national security now increasingly acknowl- edge that environmental sustainability is a neces- sary prerequisite if we are to ensure our survival. The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (popularly known as the "Earth Summit"), held in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, was the largest international summit ever held, attracting delegates from over 175 countries including more than a hundred heads of state. No citizen of the Earth can afford to be ignorant of environmental issues. |
