The first chapter begins with vo cabulary development, covering the most basic of word building elements-word parts and syllabication, vowel and consonant sounds, word roots and affixes-and the understanding of words in context. For many students at this level, the material will be a mixture of new concepts and a review of elementary word attack skills. By the time students have worked through the first four chapters, they may be aided by learning some skills that will help them in their other course assignments, covers basic study-reading skills: reading environment, a four-step study method that includes previewing, making predictions, marking and underlining, and writing up review notes. Special reading skills such as skimming and scanning, and techniques for reading maps, tables, and graphs are also taught in this chapter, which can be used at any time the instructor feels students are ready for these concepts. The last three chapters move into critical reading and thinking skills. |
