Summary: | This book is about the problems which confront politicians, planners, curriculum developers and teachers, in enacting innovations in the education and training systems of a variety of developing countries. It is a collection of case studies that have been produced from research undertaken at Sussex University over the last five years. In all cases the contributions are drawn from research theses which go well beyond the depth which can be encapsulated here. We have written with five audiences in mind. These are policy makers and planners working in developing countries; international development agency staff; graduate students in education, develop ment studies and the social sciences; the educational research com munity; teacher trainers in developing countries. The case studies presented here are organised in four groups. The first group consists of studies of curriculum change; the second focuses on changes centred on teachers; the third explores the institutional climates within which change takes place; and the fourth is concerned with system level reforms. A general pattern has been adopted in presenting the case studies which considers the rationale for the case study; the research approach adopted; description, interpretation, analysis and comment on the initiation, development, implementation, and effectiveness of the innovations identified; and finally some reflections on the research process used. |
