 The Reading Connection is designed to help students improve their reading skills. We strongly believe that the majority of students who are in need of reading instruction in high school and college are capable of reading better than they do. We also believe that, given reading material that is relevant and interesting, students will voluntarily study to improve. We have selected, therefore, material that will prove interesting, informa- tive, and relevant to students. Although the book is designed for students reading below an eighth-grade level, some of the material is written on a slightly higher level. The intrinsic subject interest of the more challenging pieces leads students, we have found, to deal with the material as easily as they manage the selections specifically written at a lower reading level.
