Summary: | Britain is an established multi-racial and multi-cultural society. Members of ethnic minorities now make up about 5 per cent of the population of Great Britain, mainly concentrated in inner-city and industrial areas. Although their representation and their involvemer in the decision-making process are still small, their participation in the political process is obviously becoming increasingly significant Muhammad Anwar has been making a close study of elections for the past ten years. In Race and Politics he looks broadly at immigration and settlement patterns in Britain and then at the civic position of ethnic minorities by outlining the development of race relations in the political context. He goes on to examine both the fac of what is happening-numbers, turnout patterns, and voting behaviour and attitudes, of the ethnic minorities to the political process and of the political parties to these minorities. In conclusion Dr Anwar argues strongly that the positive involvement of ethnic minorities in the political process, and in all aspects of British public life, is the genuine, long-term solution both to racial disadvantage and discrimination at every level and to the conditions that breed despair and conflict in our society.
