The authors have been chosen for their expertise in a given subject area: all have a wealth of experience in online searching and are now passing on the benefits of that experience. Each chapter offers guidance on the kinds of search strategies which should be most effective within a particular subject area. Frequent use is made of search examples to illustrate specific points. Chapters 4 to 16, comprising the major part of the volume, deal with online searching in a number of subject areas. A broad spectrum of subjects has been catered for: chemistry, the biological sciences, agriculture, engineering, the health sciences, computer science and information technology, business and economics, law, the social sciences and the humanities. One chapter deals with a multidisci- plinary subject- energy and the environment - rather than a more traditional discipline. In the case of two chapters-law, and business and economics - the tendency of databases to have a very marked slant towards either North American or European information has necessitated parallel chapters written by American and British authors respectively.
