This prerequisite assures that students understand basic ac- counting terminology and the financial reporting system. It is not necessary that students have a previous course in managerial or cost accounting. Users of the book should have a knowledge of elementary algebra. Al- though previous coursework in statistics, operations research, computer sciences, and other similar disciplines is not required, such work can enrich the student's experience with this book. There is ample material in the text to challenge students who have had a previous course in managerial accounting. The material in chapter appen- dixes, the longer problems and integrative cases, and the last three chapters in the book are designed to challenge students who have had at least one course in managerial accounting. This book can be used in either undergraduate or graduate courses. Most instructors emphasize exercises and short problems in basic undergraduate cost courses; longer problems and cases are more widely used in MBA programs.
