Description
Summary:The post-compulsory years of education are the subject of continuous debate. Education and Work is a collection of essays by distinguished contributors on the nature of education and its role in preparing young people for work. An introductory chapter identifies the major issues and subsequent chapters develop the themes: • the changing policy context of education and work: changing directions in policy and administration; centralisation and corporate planning; economic influences on policy change • education, work and the New Right: the influence of the New Right on current beliefs about inadequacies of education • major issues in current debates: vocational education; work transition and skill formation; socialisation into the world of work; changing work orientations and labour market participation by women; international comparisons. The essays together highlight the need for continuing debate, research into and evaluation of the content, processes and strategies of post-compulsory schooling. Immediate areas of concern are curriculum approaches to education and work; the development of a contextualist perspective and new career counselling approaches; and advocacy for a socially democratic vision of education and work.
