Issues of study design are well laid out in a natural progression of complexity, with many real examples and figures peppered throughout as illustration. There are separate chapters for in-depth discussions of surveillance, outbreak epidemiology, and the use of geographic information systems for infectious diseases, all of which again include useful examples. The chapters on microbiology and molecular biology tools are particularly comprehensive and useful, even for readers with a limited background in these areas. They provide a good overview for someone who has worked in the field of infectious diseases area for years and is now faced with the challenges and benefits associated with these new investigative tools |
