Ethnic or racial divisions are always linked to political processes and cultural differences in a new country that practices a Westminster-style democratic system. Most past studies on Sabah and Sarawak also emphasize the ethnic factor in explaining politics in these two states. However, the author of this book rejects this conventional perspective and introduces a new approach to show the political dimension in Sabah that is based on religion. According to the author, the real cause of this conflict is the result of international Christian ambitions or alliances to make Sabah together with the Philippines a region dominated by Christianity. At the same time, Islam tried to defend its dominance. Strictly speaking, this conflict occurred as a result of the clash of the world's two great civilizations, namely between Islam and Christianity, or what P. Hutington termed the clash of civilization.
