The aim is to introduce students to terminology, papermaking materials and equipment, while bringing out the basic principles of the operations rather than describing each piece of hardware in detail. The production of paper is followed through in stages from the fibrous raw material, e.g. trees, to the finished product. Other sources of fibre, e.g. straw and other cereal crops, and pulping procedures are dealt with very briefly. The text concentrates on the Fourdrinier machine, but other forming methods are discussed. Surface-sizing and super calendering are included, but not coating procedures or boardmaking. It ends with a description of the main types and uses of paper.
