Description
Summary:This text is a comprehensive introduction To research methods in social and cultural anthropology. The author's discussion focuses on the fundamentals for preparing and analyzing the supporting evidence and from such evidence, generalizations about the characteristics of humanity can be inferred. Specific elements of anthropological research - such as interviewing informants, observing ceremonial behavior and conducting surveys are elaborated at length. However, the purpose of the authors is to show how basic observations can be systematically interpreted into sociocultural generalizations. The author not only emphasizes quantification and statistics, even emphasizing qualitative aspects about anthropological work styles that are essential for effective research. The two main themes in this book are: (1) anthropological generalizations and more complex theoretical structures can only be constructed through careful implementation of basic concepts, (2) hypothesis testing and successful decomposition rely on a mixture of qualitative and quantitative research materials. To make this second edition a success, Professor Gretel Pelto has collaborated with her husband and expanded the discussion on research tools. He has also presents an analysis of current ideas on research methods and the relevance of applied anthropology to more thorough. In this text a number of many updated and new examples have been included to explain the statistical approach and its methodology practiced in anthropological research.
