Summary: | As with the three previous volumes in this series, this is a text that documents the historical development and future prospects for one of the world's most distinctive cities. It is an attempt to reflect Tokyo's kaleidoscopic disposition and the innovative character of Japanese architecture, which has evolved in response to specific urban conditions and the juxtaposition of Eastern and Western cultural influences, at a time of technological and economic revolution. In exploring Tokyo, the author looks not only at the city itself, but also at the outlying districts, exciting waterfront developments and landfill projects in Tokyo Bay. Amongst the architects featured are Tadao Ando, Toyo Ito, Kisho Kurokawa, Arata Isozaki and Shin Takamatsu, plus many overseas architects such as Peter Eisenman, Sir Norman Foster, Sir Richard Rogers and Aldo Rossi. |
