Summary: | This book is the outcome of a five-year comprehensive study of the fishes of estuaries, coastal areas and the Exclusive Economic Zone of Malaysia. The first part of the book deals with the physic-chemical parameters of the seas around Malaysia, status of fishery, analysis of fish landings of the various states, standing stock and potential yield of Malaysian fishes. More than 700 species from East and West Malaysia have been identified and information on the biology and fishery, distribution and economic importance of each species of fish has been provided. An additional feature is the description of colours of both live and preserved fish. In most cases, technical information is provided on biological aspects of fish from work done in adjoining tropical Asian regions especially from the Indian seas. Every species is represented by a hand-drawn digram will taxonomic details while some species are represented by coloured pictures. Taxonomic characters and keys of all hierarchic levels are given in detail with little drawings placed in between the couplets. As far as possible, the common name of the fish in English and Bahasa Malaysia besides the scientific name has been provided. The reference list is extensive and covers the important and latest publications on fish and fisheries within and outside the region. |
