Description
Summary:This practical guide will greatly assist final year and post-graduate students who as part of their research for a dissertation or thesis, must carry out an exhaustive, search of the existing printed and electronic literature sources. Most students will have done a certain amount of literature searching to prepare for earlier course work, but this will often not have gone farther than the library catalogue. The principles of a systematic approach are explained, suggestions are made for planning, carrying out and recording the search, obtaining the material discovered, preparing a bibliography and correctly citing the references Although intended primarily for students, academic staft involved in research and supervisors of research projects will also find it helpful Sarah Gash has been Senior Lecturer from 1983 and BA (Hons) Course Director from 1988 in the Department of Librarianship and Information Studies at Birmingham Polytechnic. From her work in academic libraries and having taught post graduate students from many backgrounds, Sarah Gash became aware that many students graduate with little knowledge of how to exploit the sources of information in their particular field. She is also particularly interested in the development of undergraduate study/personal skills, a concern also reflected in this book.
