These settlements were followed by larger spurts of immigration during the Brooke period. The white rajahs had to put up with a rebellion or two, but the Chinese community eventually settled down to play a major part in the state's development. Finally the author details the experiences of the community during the Japanese occupation and the community's first venture into democratic politics in the run up to independence.
